Chairpersons Report

This is the page for the end of Municipal Year Chairman's Report - Cllr Mrs Sue Moretta, who was the Mayor of Halewood for 2009-2010. This report is updated upon the conclusion of each Mayor's year in office around May of each year. The next update will be May 2011, when Cllr Sue Smith retires from the Chair.

I have really enjoyed my time as Mayor of Halewood, which has led me to meet so many people during my time in office, and it has been very rewarding.

The second annual "Community Achievement Awards" saw presentations to three individuals and one group, and all were richly deserved. I was honoured to make these awards myself at the December Council meeting.

Our biggest news of the year, was to become eligible to use what is known as the "Power of Well Being", where we replaced our ability to make grants under the more restrictive S.137 payments as we have done in the past. The Town Council continues to support local initiatives by using its powers, and providing such financial assistance as the Halewood Community Chest Fund, or via the Chairman's Account. The Community Chest Fund and miscellaneous grants have seen the Town Council contribute over £9,275 in grant applications in the past financial year.

We enjoyed our annual concert with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra in December 2009, in the new venue of the Halewood Centre for Learning, and which was a huge success in front of a sell out crowd.

The Community Festival ended the second Culturefest, and despite a personal fear of spiders and fairground rides, all went very well again. The Town Manager has promised that the Mayor's Cricket XI will regain the "Patron's Pot" in the cricket match which will be replayed this summer. The programme for the 2010 events looks reall exciting, and I would encourage all to take part, or attend the events.

As a Town Council we once again funded four Festive Pantomimes by Hurricane Promotions at the Hollies Hall, Arncliffe Centre, New Hutte Centre and at the Reigate Club in Merrivale, where local children enjoyed "Mother Goose", as well as a drink, crisps and a selection box. A big thank you to Father Christmas for turning up at all the venues in what is a very busy time of year for him. The Town Council staged the Gardening Competition for its fifth consecutive year, and the number of entries were outstanding. Congratulations to all those who were deemed to be winners.

In closing, I would like to say a big "Thank You" to my fellow Town Councillors, the Town Manager, and all of his staff, for the hard work throughout my year in office. I wish my successor, a happy and successful year as Mayor of Halewood.

Councillor Mrs Sue Moretta, Mayor of Halewood for 2009-2010.
