July 2010

The "Big T Party" held at the Arncliffe Centre on 8 July 2010, and the car boot sale on 11 July 2010 raised funds for the Marie Curie Cancer Care Centre in Woolton. A total of £1,172.37 was raised, and a presentation was made at the Arncliffe Centre on Wednesday 21 July 2010. Included in the photograph are members of the public who helped raise the money, including children from the Big Cherry Tree Nursery. Presenting the cheque to a representative of the Marie Curie Centre is the Deputy Mayor of Halewood, Cllr Dot Birch. Stay in touch with the website as several brave staff members of the Town Council have been signed up to "zip-wire" 160 metres from the top of the Port of Liverpool building at the Pier Head on the 26 September 2010 in aid of the Marie Curie cause!

June 2010

On Saturday 5 June 2010, Hollies pitches played host to a very special football match. Colleagues of the late Cpl Simon Hornby's, and from his regiment, played a  game against some of Simon's friends from the former Derby Arms FC. The Town Council granted free use of the facilities, which helped to raise funds for the "Help for Heroes" Fund. The Town Council have also donated the trophy below which will be played for in Simon's memory each year. Simon was killed serving his country in Afghanistan last December, and a campaign by local residents recently resulted in his name being added to the war memorial in the grounds of St Nicholas Church in Halewood Village.

Also pictures is Simon's Father, Mr Joseph Hornby, receiving the trophy before the match from the Mayor of Halewood, Cllr Sue Smith.

December 2009

December is always a busy month in the Township, with so many activities taking place.

Prior to the meeting of the Town Council on 17 December, the four winners of the 2009 Commnity Achievement Awards received a memento from the Mayor of Halewood, Cllr Sue Moretta. Pictured below are the Torrington Drive Community Association, Sara Bethany Conroy, Joe McGuinness and Miss Margaret Oultram.

The four pantomimes which took place over the weekend of 4th -6th December at the Hollies, Arncliffe, New Hutte Neighbourhood Centre, and the Reigate Club were all well received.

The Borough, and the Halewood Churches, also organised a synthetic skating rink to be erected at the Baileys Lane Sports Centre, which was enjoyed, (free), by over 700 people. The rink also had a snow machine to give a greater effect of a winters day, and the Leader of the Town Council (also the Mayor of Knowsley, Cllr Dave Smithson) attended with his wife Cllr Sarah Smithson.

The Annual Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra Concert, along with choirs from St Andrew the Apostle RC Primary, Halewood C of E Primary, and the Halewood Centre for Learning, took place at the Centre for Learning on Friday 11 December 2009. Pictured below are the orchestra with the choirs in the background, and also the Mayor and her consort who attended the event, which was enjoyed by a bumper audience.

September 2009

It was a busy start to the first meeting after the summer recess, when the Mayor of Halewood made a number of presentations to groups and individuals before the commencement of the meeting.

Mr Ian Marquis accepts a cheque on behalf of the Halewood Walking Club, followed by Joan Hayes and Joyce Smith on behalf of the Halewood Good Companions Club.

Rev Alan Jewell receives a cheque which assisted with the Halewood Family FunDay which took place in August, whilst Joan Grace from the Leathers Lane & Wood Road Residents Association, and the 2009 Rose Queen Rebecca Hughes, accept a cheque payable to the Association.

Our 2009 Gardening competition attracted even more entries, and the Mayor presented the "Parish Trophy"  to Mrs Stocks of Torrington Drive, whilst the "Ford Trophy" for the runner-up went to Mr Murray of Haslington Grove.

Finally, a presentation was made to our very own Lynn Joyner, who has now worked for the Town Council for over 30 years - congratulation Lynn!

July 2009

We are always delighted to hear of success in any sport when it involves Halewood residents, and particularly when it involves a group which uses a Town Council facility to train. It was therefore tremendous to hear of two pieces of news recently. The first was that Katarina Thompson, who won Gold in the Junior British Athletic Championships in Rome, with a record score for a British Athelete in the heptathlon. Katarina received a commemorative salver from the Town Council in September last year, when she won the title of Female Sports Personality. Well Done, (again!), Katarina, and we look forward to hearing of more of your success leading up to the 2012 Olympics.

The Halewood Tae Kwon-Do Club train out of the Arncliffe Centre, and recently contacted the Town Council to inform us of the success they had at the 2009 North Midlands Championships, held in Alfreton, Derbyshire. The students belonging to the Club achieved a staggering haul of 19 medals at the championships - 8 Gold, 6 Silver, and 5 Bronze. The number of medals achieved put Halewood at the top of the schools results listing for the event, which made Instructor Chris Davies extremely proud of his students, (and rightly so!). They now hope to repeat their success at the next tournament, which is the Scottish Championships on 5 September 2009. Halewood Tae Kwon-Do is part of the Liverpool Tae Kwon-Do Club, and classes are held at both the Halewood Leisure Centre, and the Arncliffe Sports & Community Centre. If you are interested, why not visit their website which is www.liverpool-taekwondo.co.nr  Pictured below are some of the happy and successful students showing off their medals, along with their supporters. May we offer our hearty congratulations the the Club, and hope they continue to go from strength to strength!

 July 2009

The 2009 Gardening Competition once again attracted some tremendous entries from all over Halewood. The judges certainly had a difficult time in choosing the winners, although it was also noticed how many magnificent looking gardens had not entered the competition! Lets hope that these people will consider entering next year!

The winners in each category were as follows:-

Best Kept Garden: Mrs M.Stocks, Torrington Drive.

Best Small Garden: Mrs Radway, Woodland Road

Best Hanging Basket: Ms J. Grace, Wood Road.
